LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

What is Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a hands-on technique used to treat various conditions of the lymphatic system through a specific therapeutic method. By using pumping and stretching movements to promote drainage, lymphatic drainage stimulates lymph flow and reduces and prevents fluid buildup. In 1932, Dr Vodder developed this therapeutic method, which was named after him. Dr Barbera uses Dr Vodder’s original method.

What conditions can lymphatic drainage treat?

Manual lymphatic drainage is used to treat:

post-surgical swelling that develops after tooth extractions or maxillofacial surgery

dental conditions - periodontal disease

gum disease, gingival overgrowth, gum swelling

sinusitis, with reduced nasal discharge and pain

skin conditions: acne
vulgaris, eczema, allergic skin diseases

venous stasis in the legs, for example during pregnancy or menstruation

leg swelling following prolonged standing or exposure to heat, as well as after vein stripping or sclerotherapy for varicose veins

sequelae of bruises, sprains and joint dislocations

There are also other conditions for which lymphatic drainage can be helpful:

  • lymphoedema, such as swelling in the upper limbs following mastectomy or in the lower limbs caused by treatment for cancers of the male and female reproductive organs
  • localized post-traumatic swelling caused by muscle fiber tears, joint dislocation or the removal of a cast
  • post-phlebitic syndrome, with resolution of edema caused by venous obstruction
  • osteoarthritis and rheumatic diseases
  • chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract
  • chronic constipation (peristalsis and abdominal wall muscle relaxation are encouraged).

Promotes healing

Another important benefit of lymphatic drainage is its healing effect, which also delivers excellent results in cosmetic treatments.

It is particularly suitable for adipose conditions, areas where fat reduction is desired, and people undergoing weight-loss treatment, for whom it helps maintain good skin tone.

Dr. Barbera provides lymphatic drainage at both of her clinics in Milan.
